The Duchess of Abrantes was the wife of the French General Jean-Andoche Junot. She was a writer, extravagant spender, and prominent socialite in French society, known for her caustic wit and sarcasm which was often directed at Napoleon. Napoleon for the most part tolerated her criticisms, calling her petite peste ("little pest").   Charitable and Gentle Reader! to thee the Author of this Book has little to say, thy attributes being the godlike virtues of meekness and charity.. Pious and Religious Reader! let not thy feelings be offended, and withhold thy censure, until thou shalt find in these pages a single sentiment inconsistent with the spirit and principles of that holy religion which thou professest; and condemn not.

Unlike the better-known leader Little Napoleon was by contrast an incompetent buffoon, although prone to similar dreams of grandeur. Students of strategy still learn from such spectacular failures as the Amphibious Invasion of Paraguay (aborted due to lack of coastline) and the Occupation of Boardwalk (cut short by exorbitant hotel prices). A real page turner & great introduction to the life & times of Napoleon Bonaparte. Very definite account, thoroughly researched & referenced. Although Andrew Roberts may be biased towards Napoleon, controversial & unsettling events during the period are dealt with in a balanced approach/5(). Fan of this book? Mr. Kelly writes. Roberts brilliantly conveys the sheer energy and presence of Napoleon the organizational and military whirlwind who, through crisp and incessant questioning, sized up people and problems and got things done.
